If you’re a writer and you don’t blog, you’re missing out on an awesome opportunity to reach your readership with fresh content they crave. As writers, our number one responsibility is to write. But did you know that your reader’s responsibility is to read your words?

I know it seems silly to say, but readers desire to connect on a deep and emotional level with their authors. But, if you don’t have a website and blog, you’re essentially telling your readers that you don’t care about their needs.

GASP!

When I started writing, I did so on a blog. I did not have a book. I did not have much of an audience. But I had my words. Think about your favorite author. How often do you search the web for their next book? In those moments of searching, you’re usually brought to their website which tells you what they’re writing next.

There are three big things you need to master your blog and succeed in your writing.

1. Deeper connection.

People desire connection and we’re distinctly wired for connection and communication. It’s hard to go through your day without some sort of connection with people. As writers, our job is to understand our reader by knowing their hopes, fears, joys, and desires.

Our words have the ability to help people connect, on a deep and emotional level, with their dreams, how they act, and what they think about. A blog gives you the power to connect with your readers on a deeper level than just by writing books and magazine articles.

And who knows, you just may show them a mirror of their own lives and help them escape that life. Your audience desires to connect with you on a personal level and utilizing this medium allows you to become accessible and attainable.

2. Transparency about your life.

I know, I know, it’s easy to distance yourself from the day to day grind and not allow yourself to be vulnerable. But doing this one thing gives your readers an insight into your life and helps them discover something about themselves.

If all we give our ideas without a sense of vulnerability on our part, we’re not connecting with our reader, in fact, we’re distancing ourselves and alienating them.

People long for the real you! They want you to be authentic and vulnerable. Your life is full of stories, adventures, and ideas that can fill pages of content. This is the foundation for a blog. And the more consistent you are, the more your readers will stick around for their next fix.

3. Use a blog to prime the pump for your next book or article.

This is where a blog really can benefit your writing. As writers and content producers, it’s easy to become bogged down on what to write next or what idea to pursue. Using your blog to create even more valuable content is where it all begins.

You can use a few posts to test out a new book idea or chapter concept. Maybe you have a new series of articles you desire to produce. Use your blog to test the waters and see if people are receptive to that concept.

No matter what you choose to do, I encourage you to start a blog, get writing, and become available to your readers and allow them to see the real you!
